Sheilas Wheels Scam

Hi, I recently had an accident which resulted in the car I was driving being written off. I have been paid out but the insurance company want me to carry on paying the monthly instalments for the insurance even though the car doesn't exist any more, and they sent me a letter out stating that the insurance was now lapsed. I cancelled the direct debit, as you would but they sent me a letter out asking why I have cancelled the direct debit. The way I see it is that there is no longer a car to insure, so the payments should stop. The insurance company stated that they would stop dealing with the claim unless the payments started up forthwith. This doesn't seem fair or right to me. Are there any insurance experts on here that can verify what they are saying is right or not?
regards,
Craig

It is not a 'scam'. When you buy car insurance you purchase an annual policy and can choose to pay monthly if required.
If you have a claim during the policy then you have to pay the full cost of the annual policy.0 -
As above, you purchased an annual policy, so you have to pay what you owe.
I'm sure if you speak to them and ask them to explain, you will undersand.Total Mortgage OP £61,000Outstanding Mortgage £27,971Emergency Fund £62,100I AM NOW MORTGAGE NEUTRAL!!!! <<Sep-20>>0 -
is there really any need for that Jim? It was a legitimate question. !!!!!! like you are what is wrong with the world.
Calling scam where there is no scam at all is what is wrong.I have been paid out but the insurance company want me to carry on paying the monthly instalments for the insurance even though the car doesn't exist any more
Correct. You took a loan out to pay your car insurance. Just because you dont have the car any more does not mean you no longer have to pay that loan. The way I see it is that there is no longer a car to insure, so the payments should stop.
Your debt doesnt get wiped just because you dont have the car.The insurance company stated that they would stop dealing with the claim unless the payments started up forthwith. This doesn't seem fair or right to me. Are there any insurance experts on here that can verify what they are saying is right or not?
it is correct. Car insurance is bought annually to cover that period of time. If you pay monthly then all you are doing is borrowing money to pay the annual premium. If you claim in the policy year then the policy has done its job and the insurer is entitled to full premium. Most will transfer it to a new vehicle (although some of the budget providers will not).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Jesus you people are harsh. Is it possible sonicgroove didn't know he had an annual policy? Have they come back since it was explained to them and said they still don't intend to pay - no!
Well done to Keith and Lippy for explaining the situation clearly without feeling the need to insult and belittle what could well have been a simple misunderstanding.0 -
Can I thank the people who attempted to answer my query in a civilised manner, It is gratefully received.
