Advice

Hi

My OH is looking to buy a table saw for DIY projects in the house. After struggling to get a tradesperson in to carry out quite a bit of joinery he has decided to book some time off work and do the work himself. He has carried out lots of work in the past in the house to a high standard so I do trust him:D, the only reason for hiring somebody was lack of time at weekends.

He has told me he needs a table saw, can anybody advise what budget is best for one of these. I know it is only for DIY use but we would prefer to get one that is reliable. If anybody can recommend some decent makes and models that would be great.

Many thanks for reading

xxx

Lidl/Aldi always have good offers on these and their table saws are good with dust extraction.

    Have you considered hiring one?
  • That's a good idea! One of the issues was storing the thing so that could be a good solution.

I will put the idea to him, is it the usual HSS Hire type places?

    Thanks again.

Cheapest decent one is probably the Axminster TS200 at about £200. Cheaper ones will be horribly noisy and not probably accurate enough for good quality work.
Lots of "which table saw should I buy?" discussion at the ukworkshop forums.

What will he be using the table saw for? A plunge saw would be more useful I would of thought for jobs around the house. Also easy to store.

    John..
  • It's my OH who said he needed a table saw. The jobs he will be carrying out are hanging 3 doors and fire door, making a banister to existing staircase, building a framework in alcove which we are using as a wardrobe and fixing doors on it, also skirting boards in loft extension. I am sure I can find him some more jobs too:D

He has a compound mitre saw and a circular saw so I am thinking this is just a ploy so he can buy more power tools (toys):D

We have had a nightmare getting a joiner out to actually quote for the work and when they have they have never got back to us. We are happy to pay however much it costs for a nice job. My OH is busy with work so would have to take holidays to do any DIY.

Thanks for all your help so far.

For the jobs you have listed a table saw would be of no use. I'm a joiner and a table saw is probably one of my least used powertools.
The plunge saw would come in handy for hanging doors. The other jobs you have listed would be best done using the tools he already has (mitre saw)

    John.
