Activated My HMRC Online Service But Login Problem

Having registered as a sole trader with HMRC, I have now activated my account with the code they sent me to use their online services. However, when I went to the Self Assessment page to login, my details were not accepted. How come?

Is this because I still haven't received the Unique Taxpayer Reference code from them, which they said could take up to six weeks to receive, or is there another problem here?

I was led to believe that once you had registered online as sole trader with HMRC and then activated your account with their code, you could start using the Self Assessment service.

Have just received my Unique Taxpayer Reference from HMRC in the post, so will I now be able access the Self Assessment page?
  • You won't know until you try, but congrats on taking the plunge.

Thank you. I am hoping to make my writing business a success, and will continue to write and publish as many new Kindle books as I possibly can, in addition to trying to attract new clients.

I'll be following your posts closely, as I'm also an aspiring writer so you're kind of paving the way for me. I think we are in different genres as someone mentioned yours in another thread (won't say here in case you want to keep it quiet for any reason) so no competition, lol. I don't have anything finished to put up yet either!

If you wanted to send a link any time, I'd be interested to see your work.

  • I think this needs to be posted in the cutting tax forum.
This is for benefits and tax credits sorry i cant help
  • Are you trying to use the code that was sent in the post? If it's not accepting it, then you'll have to phone them. Your UTR can take up to 6 weeks, as you said, but your code to activate your self assessment service is only valid for 28 days.

You're not mixing up the code you get when you first sign up with the code you get through the post, are you?
