Garden design or landscaping - how much?

I have moved from a flat to a house and know have a garden. It's a new build house and the builder turfed it but that is all. It's a small garden - just a rectangle of grass about the same size as the footprint of the house. I would really like to get someone to design and landscape it to make the best use of the space - create a patio area, some flower beds, some bordering with pebbles or similar.
I have looked at some local gardeners websites and will contact them but I would be really interested to hear from other people - how much did something similar cost you? Just so that I know what kind of prices I will be looking at.
