Is this legal???

Hi

Unfortunately I've had a bad time lately and have had two car accidents (one my fault) and a speeding fine. This has meant that my car insurance premium has gone through the roof!!! The latest incident is priced at around 1200 to repair (and this one is my fault!). I have recently acquired a company car through my new employer so am exploring one option.

I no longer drive our other car (the damaged one); my partner does. I'm wondering whether I can claim for this damage under my insurance policy, then cancel the policy, then my partner start off her own policy without me on it; thus saving any premium increases, and my partner having the opportunity to start her own quest for no-cliams bonuses. I now have a company car so no longer need to be insured on the other vehicle.

Can we do this???

Not illegal, as you are not cheating anyone. Probably quite a good idea.

If you are paying by instalments and make a claim you have to pay the balance of the premiums as part of the claim.
If you had an accident, and you are paid up, you can make a claim with out consequence to anyone else insuring the same vehicle later as long as its not an insurance write off.
But, if you get your partner to insure the vehicle as the main driver, and you are actually the main driver, that is fraud.

Check your company car insurance policy because they come in two varieties; those that insure you to drive any other vehicle (including your wifes), and those that don't!!

You won't get any refund on the policy you are cancelling.

But as long as you aren't going to drive the partner's car and are not insured on it, you don't have a problem.

You probably also want to make your wife the registered keeper of the car.

Why? I insured a car belonging to SWMBO for years, they did know but, didn't mind.

I am not sure if it affects the premiums or whether just some insurance companies will not insure the car if you are not the registered keeper. Until recently I always had MOTABILITY vehicles (covered by a group policy) so it was of no concern to me, but when I bought my own car they needed to know if the vehicle was in my own name or not.

The main reason for registering it in your wife's name is that, if your company car insurance covers you to drive any other vehicle, it will prob be any other vehicle not belonging to you, so you need to put that car out of your ownership.

I agree with the advice to leave this policy running til renewal date. To cancel it wil nil refund and start a new one is chucking money away.

Will you have lost all your NCD? It may be even more expensive in your dw's name wil no ncd than it is already, so check out some quotes before making any decisions.

And finally, my golden rule of motor insurance (I worked in the industry for 10 yrs or so).....at the first opportunity, PROTECT YOUR BONUS!!! i know it's a bit late for you now, but this advice goes to your DW, and anyone else reading this!!
