The garage that I bought my Golf from has sent me a letter saying I should be changing my cambelt at 40,000 miles. I always thought that cambelts were good for approx 60,000 miles, is the garage trying it on?

It would appear to be true, 40k miles, or 4 years.
Reasons seem to centre around both the increased camshaft load on the diesel PD engines, and the usage of plastic impeller water pumps, which affects both diesel and petrol models.0 -
different engines have different time scales for the belt to changed. 40-60k sounds ok. so no, i dont think the garage is trying it on but shop around.0

VW have a quality issue with their tensioners manufactured between certain dates. They were spec'd for 60K changes, but models manufactured between certain dates have been reduced to 40K.
IIRC after your first change and the poor quality tensioners have been replaced with a new design you can revet to 60K changes, but call your dealer and they will no exact build dates affected etc.0
