If you can get the boiler on an external wall do it or you will end up paying just as much for the flue as you did the boiler.
I've always put my combi's in the loft on the gable end.
this time as I'm converting the loft its going to the outhouse.
Even if they need to do you a new drain connection for the kitchen, on the scale of the job your doing it shouldn't be much to do so

    Thanks.

The current boiler (not in use) is still on the wall and vents outside so I might leave it in that spot if it's easier/cheaper.

I'm surprised that I can't vent it up a chimney though - does anyone know why exactly? The fireplace would be removed - my plan was to just have the boiler and oven extractor fan use it (I am not an expert on these things, it was just a thought).

If you can have a gas fire use a chimney, why not a boiler?

I had my kitchens and bathrooms totally re-fitted a few years ago and although it might have been cheaper for me to buy the fittings myself I decided to get the fitters to buy everything so that when something went wrong (eg the supplier sent the wrong basin) it was up to the fitter to sort it out and he couldn't charge me for wasted time.
