Barclays PPI - cheque to wrong address

Hi everyone,
Wondering if anyone's had a similar experience, or whether it would be worth me going to the ombudsman... Or maybe I just need to let off steam!
At the end of Dec 2012 I received a letter from Barclays informing me that I may be entitled to claim for missold PPI. I filled in their online form and left it at that.
A couple of months ago I hadn't heard anything from them, so looked online for a phone number to find out what was happening. I didn't find a phone number, but found info telling me they aim to complete the process in 8 weeks, but that they are very very busy at the moment so bear with them (or words to that effect). I gave them the benefit of the doubt and left it a while longer.
Yesterday, I thought nope, six months is plenty, and in the absence of a PPI info line phone number, I just phoned their normal number.
The person I spoke to told me the case had been resolved and hadn't I received my cheque?
!!!
After a bit of backwards and forwards we established that they had sent it to my previous address, which I left 5.5 years ago. When I moved, I went into my branch to update my address, with ID etc. Since then, they have sent all correspondence to my new address, with no problem. And the original PPI complaint form came to my new address!
According to them, this is what needs to happen to resolve the situation and for me to receive the cheque:
I find it really unacceptable that they made the mistake in my address, and I have to pay for it! Also more than a little suspect that a) they've been sending mail to the correct address fine for 5.5 yrs, it's only when it comes to giving me the cheque they get it wrong, and b) why won't they tell me the original claim amount?
Thanks for bearing with and sticking at reading this, I realise it's a bit of a rant...
Basically, having got this far I'd really like the whole thing resolved as quick as poss. I've kind of resigned myself to the fact that this is going to involve me leaving work early and losing pay to update my address - but before I do that I thought I'd see if anyone has had the same problem, or if there's a better way, or something magic I can say to them to get them to sort it out!
Any thoughts appreciated and thankful for :-)

According to them, this is what needs to happen to resolve the situation and for me to receive the cheque:
- I have to go to my 'local' branch, present two forms of ID with my current address on to prove that I've moved house (which they already know). This would involve a 20 mile round trip in the car (cost £8.50), parking of £2.00, plus at least an hour of my time, which would have to be taken out of my working day, as I work in the middle of nowhere, and the branch isn't open on Saturdays.
- I then phone the PPI dept to tell them I've updated my address
- The PPI dept will re-open my claim and re-investigate it
- If they decide to uphold the claim, they will reissue a cheque
I find it really unacceptable that they made the mistake in my address, and I have to pay for it! Also more than a little suspect that a) they've been sending mail to the correct address fine for 5.5 yrs, it's only when it comes to giving me the cheque they get it wrong, and b) why won't they tell me the original claim amount?
