Best small car for long distance?
Hi all
Any advice on whether a small city car would be any good on long distance? I do around 75 miles each weekday but like the size of cars such as Aygo's etc. I have however heard they are unreliable and the clutch would be likely to go pretty quickly doing such a distance.
Does anyone have such car and find that it is ok doing a high mileage, or can anyone recommend anything similar?
Thanks

defo not a city car! doing big mileage in a small cc engined car will cost you more then a 1.6, in petrol and repairs0

Is your 75 miles each day city driving or would it be mostly on motorways and major roads? If it's the latter, I'm not sure why this would be bad for a clutch? Surely clutches wear through gear changes, and you'd have far fewer of these on long motorway drives where you just spend most of your time in top gear than you would for city driving.
What is it that appeals about a small car like an Aygo?
75 miles every weekday for a typical 48 week working week is 18,000 miles a year. Excluding any other trips you take. I'd be looking at a diesel for those distances. I'd also want something more comfortable than an Aygo, with a much nicer interior, if I was going to be spending that much time in a car! And something with better crash protection come to that.
Having said all that my boss has an Aygo and regularly does long trips in it (at least two 120 mile trips every week) and seems happy with it. Personally I think he's mad, esepecially since his salary must be pushing £100k!
The small (35L I think) fuel tank of an Aygo may get annoying for high mileage use as you'll be filling up pretty often.0 -
For a pretty small car suggestion, how about a Volkswagen Polo Blumotion? (Parlty guessing you're thinking of fuel economy here...)0

Its the size that appeals - I really want a small car. I currently have an old Micra - so am used to small interior and small petrol tank.
My drive is varied, a chunk on motorway and then some B roads, this I guess is where my gear changing would occur more.0 -

Yes, but why? Is it a style thing? An economy thing? A fear of being able to drive or park a bigger car? Or something else? If you're absolutely certain this is all you want then obviously do whatever you want! But most people are going to read your first post and think you'd be better off in something bigger and more comfortable.0 -

A 900cc would be working a lot harder then a 1600 even more with a load, this will be an increase in fuel consumption and wear on the engine. A car with a 1300cc would suit you0 -
1300 honda civics can be had at reasonable prices. A garage once said to me..Honda Civics..waste of time.We cant make any money on them as they never go wrong mate.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

Thank you all
Ultrasonic - it is the fear of driving something bigger, I know it is psychological and I could drive something bigger but my mind is fixed on a small car
red eye - I understand where you are coming from. This is what my OH has told me
C_Mababejibe - I would find that too big
Thank you for all the comments so far, I know I am being difficult. Why can't they put a large engine in a small car just for me lol!!0 -
