Npower to end spreading warmth tarriff

I received a letter from Npower a couple of weeks ago stating that the spreading warmth tariff would be ending on 19th August, and was shocked at the new standing charges from 20 August which are really exorbitant, especially for gas which works out at nearly £15 month, has the government pulled the plug on funding for the social tariffs altogether?

The Warm Home Discount offers eligible npower customers an annual benefit of £135 (Inclusive of VAT) on their electricity bill. This discount is now being offered to customers instead of the Spreading Warmth Tariff which has now been closed to new applications.

  • Thanks, but i've already received that one off payment as a credit to my account in April when Npower said the scheme was ending

The Warm home discount is intended to replace the social tariffs. The suppliers are just closing them at different times.

  • The 'core group' will be seamlessly transferred, the 'broader group' will have to re-apply as they would have to have done anyway. Pensioners under 75 on the 'guarantee element' of Pension Credit who do not also receive the 'savings credit' element are pre-considered by GOV to be are at risk of fuel poverty and are automatically offered the WHD by their supplier. The supplier who is legally obliged to offer the discount is pre-informed by the DWP of this, and there is no need for the customer to request the discount.

The 'broader group' is non-automatic, anyone coming to the end of their term must re-apply, in nPowers case you would have been eligible to apply or re-apply for the '13/14 year from 1st April 2013.

Thanks , I wasn't aware it ran year on year,I thought it was a one off scheme running for only a short period of time,I remember receiving the first letter about it some time ago & rang npower, who said I didn't qualify as I was on spreading warmth, then I received a letter at the beginning of the year about warm home & thought I would give it a go,received a letter saying money would be credited at end apr when scheme ended, but made no mention of repeat in next fin year, this only applies to electricity,so I"ll have to look around for a cheaper gas supplier in aug
