Hi Esther, this 2nd purse business, I did look briefly at the thread once but isn't it like buying food twice? Once at the bargain price for your stock and then again when you buy from yourself?

    Have I got that wrong?

I may need to have another look at the thread :)

Hi Kittie, it is a bit complicated until you get your head around it and yes, you do buy back from yourself, but once you get going the second purse money feels like free money because it isn't part of your normal grocery money and is money that you have built up for the purpose of buying bargains. You do need some 'capital' to start, but this can be as little as £10 a month.

What you are doing is making sure that you always have money available to buy bargains when they are there so that you never have to pay full price to the SM's for those things again. it does work though I suppose like everything else, we are all different and have our different ways and what works for one won't work for another. I think it's great because even though I am having to find the larger amount of money to 'buy' it back from myself, that is more money for me to buy more bargains and very soon now I will have savings that I will then use for something else, in my case towards Christmas. For others it may be to buy a luxury item etc.
I'm not good at explaining sorry. Esther x

It's OK Esther I think I understand if I think of it as running a small business for personal use.

Hmmm, will have to have a think about this idea especially if I can make a profit from buying whisky on discount and then sell it full price to DH :rotfl: There could be a plan in there.

    Excellent :j:j

Fabric conditioner is something I have only very rarely bought as my mum never used it. It is probably nicer for towels to have been rinsed in it but we have managed ok without, just another added expense I think.
My mum did use to iron my terry nappies and I think towels. She ironed my socks and said it helped to keep them clean longer - no idea why???
Me - I iron as little as possible. Most things are fine without an iron once you wear them.

The cost of food is rediculous. When you have cut right back to the bare bones where do you go next? We already have mince meals that by the time I have stretched them and stretched them again have very little actual mince in.

I started the second purse challenge a couple of months ago and that is now starting to reap rewards. It's certainly worth having a look at. Takes some getting your head round but once you get the hang of it helps a lot.
FUDDLE, I saw you sign up but haven't seen you back again. Have you been carrying on with it or given up?

    God bless, Esther x

Ooh second purse challenge... I'll have to have a look at that.
    Thanks Esther.

I felt like I had to spend a lot on my stocks before I could see any monetary reward and found myself willing me to finish something so I could go get another one out of the stock cupboard, just so I could pay myself. I'm too much of a control freak for it and felt I was ruled by my stocks and not the other way round. I'm weird Esther, my stocks are like my therapy :rotfl:It is such a good idea though and one I wish I could make work for me.

You did a very good job of explaining Esther :) It's a double edge win. You get to have a saving fund for extras along with always money in the pot to buy essentials. Damn, I've convinced myself it's great again. I will sleep on it :rotfl:

I got married 2 years ago as I said earlier & it cost £400, a colleague was getting married 2 months before me, her 4th marriage & spent £5000+.
At one point she made snitty remarks about the low cost of my wedding & my laid back attitude to it all, as her's was planned like military exercise.
In the end I retorted that whereas she was planning a wedding I was organising my marriage!

    WELL DONE HESTER

FUDDLE like I said, it's got to be what works for you. If its going to stress you out there has to be another way for you. If when you buy something cheaper you put the savings in a jar, then you would build up a savings fund. I read this years ago in a Shirley Goode book. Whenever she used a coupon or got a bargain she paid herself the money she had saved. I do this now for my Chistmas fund so for instance, when I go to Mr T's with my £4 off a £40 spend voucher I put the £4 in my Christmas fund. Sometimes I just can't afford to do it, but over the year I build up quite an amount. As I recently had Aldi and Mr T vouchers I was able to make use of them because of the second purse money which I used for bargains on offer. Without that I would have only been able to use one voucher so win win situation, plus I saved myself about £25 on products I will use within a couple of months. Glad you could understand the explanation. God Bless. Esther x
