Painting external stonework around door and above windows

Options
I have stonework (don't know the technical term) around my front dor and above the windows on th front of my house.

At the moment these are painetd black with the detailing in yellow. I want to change this to cream with red detailing.

1) What is the best way to get rid of the black and yelow paint? Do I have to?

2) What is the best paint to use?

Many thanks.

Hi, dori! The tech term is *lintel*. We have similar. Mine were painted last year, and the decorator used a hot air gun to remove a lot of the old paint first. Be careful not to burn any adjacent woodwork.

If you paint straight onto the black, you may need a couple of coats for good coverage. I'd agree with the above - use a respected brand. Cheap paint is more expensive in the long run IME.

If the lintel and step are gloss you might be best using a hot air gun so that masonry paint can key to it.

If the paint is loose use pva glue mixed 50/50 with water its much cheaper than using stablishing solution.

I recommend ICI weathershield (trade) you can get it at any Dulxe trade counters, thats where we got ours and I am not trade, you can get nectar points off purchase and a 10% card for next time.

Trade paint is much thicker than the B&Q paint you find, and may last longer.
