Energy Bills when moving in to a new home.
Hi,
Quick question, I moved into a new property earlier this week and on moving day (and contracts signed day) I took a photo of the gas and electricity meter. the property was unoccupied for several months before I moved in but they did have builders in doing renovations.
I'm concerned when I switch to a new provider, the provider who the property was with before are going to try to bill me for stuff I've never used (ie the standing charge, usage by builders etc). If they do can I just provide my time stamped photos and proof of when i took responsibility for the property and send them back to the previous owner?
Many thanks.

It sounds as if you have not yet contacted the current supplier to the property.
Do that pronto, tell them when you moved in and the meter readings on that day as welll as your name of course.
They should then start billing you from that date and those readings, anything before that should be billed to the previous owner/occupier.
Once you have set up an account with them you will be free to start a switch if you wish.0 -
Hey, thanks.
Didn't know I needed to, figured they'd get the information from the company I switched to.
Registered with them now on a deal with no lock in so I can take my time choosing a tariff.

But you cannot switch until you register with the existing provider, with whom you are in a deemed contract from day one.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

You would be rersponsible for the supply from the day you completed the purchase. They may request confirmation (such as a solicitors letter/completion statement) if the period is long and the date does not coincide with the date provided by the seller when they sold the property.
The supplier will probably bill you on their standard (expensive) tariff from that date until you advised them otherwise.0
