if you taking a lot of gadets, and your home insurance (if you have any) doesnt cover it outside the residence, you're better off getting specialist cover. most travel insurance companies would class the particular items as valuables and there would be a single article limit...

You need to check both your home contents insurance and travel insurance.
    You need to find out

    1) what is the total you are insured for
    2) What is the single item limit and do any exceed this
    3) Are they classed as personal possessions or valuables on your policys.

Try to avoid being insured twice.
If you need to claim the companies will argue so it will cause delays and possibly two claims (as well as paying for 2 lots of insurance).

It's the limit for any single item. They will pay for many items.
So lets say their limit is £1500 and you have 2 items worth £1400 then that's fine.
Any expensive items you have need to be added on seperately.
I have added on watches. cameras and bicycles to my home insurance policy and it's not that expensive.

thank you lisyloo...but why would you need to inform them about the camera, camcorder...etc if it is within the limit they specified?

You don't need to inform them of anything that is within the specified limits.
Only items that are above the limit.
The items that I have added on seperately are above my policy single item limit.

As stated before be careful to make sure what your policy definies as a "valuable"

Usually valuables are - money, jewelry, art, stamp collections, gold and furs etc. and personal possessions are sports equipment, cameras, watches etc.

However I have seen policies where standard household electronic items are considered "valuables" and that makes a huge deal of difference to the cover you need because most of us these days have quite a lot of TVs, computers, DVD players, sound systems etc.

Say for example, your overall baggage limit is £3,000. That's the overall cap. A single article limit, say £350, is what you can claim per each item.
