Problems setting up Internet Router

Options
Hello kind techies.

I wonder if anyone can help with the following please.

I have just subscribed to Wanadoo broadband and am getting it via a Thomson Speedtouch 330 DSL modem.

I have a Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router which I would like to use in conjunction with my Wanadoo broadband.

The problem is that the modem has a USB cable coming out of it and the router needs an ethernet cable going into it. I looked today for a USB to Ethernet adaptor but could only see ones where the USB plug on the adaptor was a "male" one when I would need a female one in order to connect it to the male USB plug that comes from the modem.

The guy in the computer shop tried to sell me a £90 wireless router which has a USB input to it but I'd rather not do this seeing as I already have a wireless router, albeit one that only takes an Ethernt cable into it.

I'm also ot too keen on upgrading to Wanadoo's own wireless option as it costs more and also ties me into a telephone bill contract with them.

Could I therefore ask, if it is possible to get hold of a USB to Ethernet adaptor that will receive a "male" USB cable and if so would this work properly as a link between the DSL modem and my wireless router? Or maybe there is another solution?

Thanks in advance for your help with this.

The 330 is USB modem only, its designed to connect 1 PC to ADSL.

You could buy a standard adsl (wired) router, replacing the 330 modem with that and connect the wireless router from its WAN port to one of the ethernet ports on the new router. This should work, but you may need to configure the wireless router to act as an access point only and disable its router features.

The next option is to buy a wireless adsl router, again replacing the 330 modem and the wireless router too. This would be easier to configure and manage, plus should be less issues with setting up.
  • You should in theory be able to use both. Just leave the wireless router connected to the PC, but configure the PC to act as a server and use the built in Networking in Windows.

In practice, it would probably be easier to buy a new box
