Cancelled Credit Card

Hi there,
I recently I had a problem where I had lost my card and had to have it cancelled. But I later noticed that a transaction went through 6 days after I had cancelled the card.(from an internet company that I had subscribed to). I am just curious as to why that transaction could have possibly gone through when I had a new card issued with a new credit card number.
The new card was issued 4 days after the card was cancelled. I did not inform my new card details to the internet company, and would have thought that they needed my new details. Is it possible to still receive payment via a credit card (with a valid expiry date) that that has now been cancelled? The credit card in question is a HSBC mastercard. This is just something which has been bugging me.
Thanks
Sam
