parking in London W1a & how to spend 5 hrs

Options
Have to take son to a function at Hyatt Regency hotel in Portman square on Sunday. Any advice for parking in this area and how to spend 5 hours (with a 9 year old) would be much appreciated.

Are you going to be spending the 5 hours in the hotel or do you intend to have a look round London?

As for parking try

National Car Parks
21 Bryanston Street W1H 7AB
Nearest Transport Station: Marble Arch

National Car Parks

You are within a 5 min drive to London Zoo plenty of parking and if you don't want to go to the zoo Regents Park itself is quite nice and you could walk to the Planetarium or Madam Tussauds easily...

The parking meters and single yellow lines are free in that area on a Sunday

Check carefully with Westminster Council or whoever the council is. I thought that single yellow lines were only free after 1.30 p.m. This is going back 2-3 years and maybe it's changed.

Don't park with a wheel up on the kerb as you'll get a ticket! Don't leave your car because it's 1.28 p.m. and it's only a couple of minutes either! The wardens will be patrolling like mad on Sunday and in my experience, will only too happily give you the wrong information if it means they get to ticket you.

You'll be fighting for a space on a single yellow line with all the shoppers looking to avoid parking/congestion charge fees too but it is well worth it as it will be expensive to park in an NCP for five hours (£15.00+ at a conservative estimate).

I also don't remember the meters being free on a Sunday but I could be wrong.

Finally, don't get confused and park in a resident's space as you'll get ticketed for that too!

There are so many ways of getting you!

As you can see the congestion charge does not apply on Sundays...
<LI class=pagebody>The Congestion Charging
Operating Hours are 7:00AM - 6:00PM <LI class=pagebody>Charging Days are Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays). <LI class=pagebody>The Congestion Charging Zone is clearly defined by signs and / or road markings at entrance and exit points.
[*]The standard daily charge is £8.

Loads on info on the website https://www.westminster.gov.uk

Had a look myself and the zone appears to be F3, which means meter bays are free on Sunday but resident's bays are not and you would get a ticket. Lines do vary in Westminster so depends on the exact street. However, Portman Square is very near Oxford Street so it would be difficult to rely on finding a free space.

The website lists a Masterpark car park at Marble Arch at £16 for 6 hours or Cramer Street that is half price on Sunday at 'only' £11 for that time.

Id agree that parking should be free on Sunday, and no congestion charge. But dont whatever you do park in a residents bay, as has already been mentioned........my sister did on Easter Sunday, and got towed away and had to pay over £200:eek:

Depending on the weather you could go to the Princess Diana playground in Kensington gardens. From Marble Arch just follow the Bayswater Road as far as Queensway.Maybe 30 min walk. Or you could get a bus from the top of Park Lane to the Science/Natural History museums (or walk through Hyde Park via the Princess Diana water memorial).
Or you could go to the new Primark at Marble Arch followed by MacDonalds!!;)
