Bags for food recycling bins?

Hi our council issues us with brown caddy bins for our food recycling, a small one that is supposed to go in your kitchen and then a bigger one to empty the smaller one into. Weirdly when we first had them they gave us compostable bags for the small caddy but not for the big one!! The first year I bought bags myself for the big one (25 litres) but they work out quite expensive, approx 25p each, which I know is not much per week but they only get thrown away with the food) so in these times of trying to save money I am looking for a cheaper alternative (and newspaper is not an option as the council suggest as we don't have one), any ideas please as supermarkets only do the smaller size ones?

Have a look here. And would it be worth getting 30L ones if you can't find 25L?

I'm puzzled as to why you need to use a second bag for the large bin, I just tie the small bag and throw it in with the garden cuttings and it gets emptied every fortnight.

Wilkinsons is the cheapest I have found.
  • Make use of small bags you can place all the waste and you can trow it and use another in the next. If you use big bags you need to wait until it is filled and then throw, mean while all the smell and mosquito's will harm you by causing harm ful diseases.

Talking of mosquito's, I used to keep my large food waste box in my kitchen, not anymore. I must have kept the lid open without noticing one day, some time after I noticed maggots crawling around the where the lid shuts. Gross!! Never again! I now leave it outside.

Admittedly, I never used recyclable bags, on hindsight, perhaps I should have.

Because you're not supposed to do that. Food waste and garden waste are treated and collected differently, that's why you get two separate bins and collections genius.

Does depend a bit on the system - we have the kitchen caddy and outside bin system - we never put a bag in the outside one as the kitchen bin has the small liners in so whatever is put outside is already sealed. That of course assumes you use the potato starch plastic ones - if you use paper etc then it will seep through. One cheap option is to buy your fruit and veg in a local greengrocer that still uses brown paper bags!

If you want the caddy liners they are around 3p each here - http://www.bathnes.getcomposting.com/Shop/Composting_Accessories/CBAGSMLX3_Caddy_Liners_Small_x_3_Rolls.html

If you are already using caddy bags why do you need a bag in your larger outside bin? I just put the food waste already tied in a bio-degradable bag from the kitchen caddy into the outside bin.

As people are suggesting putting a bio-degradable bag from the kitchen caddy into the outside bin, contact your local authorities recycling centre and ask if it's OK to do this if you think it's an issue.

The council here tells us to put the food waste bags into the large bin with the garden waste as they are treated the same and get composted together anyway.
