I paid in a cheque today at my local branch of HSBC. It was a Barclays cheque, paid straight into my First Direct account.
My question is, when will it show as a credit to my account? The cheque was paid in around 2pm thisafternoon, just checked internet banking, nothing showing. Phoned First direct only to be told I can't draw against it for 4 days anyway. I know that. I know I will have to let it clear...but Im sure the credit should be showing on my account the same day. The man on the phone said it might be tomorrow or the next day...anyone else know? thanks.

It should show on your account by the end of business tomorrow.0

As Gromitt says it should show at the end of tomorrows business.
If you read page 7 of this PDF it tells you First Directs cheque clearing cycle.
