debt collector Clarity

in Credit cards
I had a letter from Clarity - debt collector for Egg money - the account number they have is not one I currently use and as far as I can recall is no longer in use. I do not believe I owe money on this account. When I phone Egg they promise to return my call after looking at previous statements and they do not phone me back. I have phoned them four times now and emailed them constantly on a daily basis over the last 3 days, reminding them I am still waiting for their call - my personal information is up to date (phone number and email address etc.) when I phoned Clarity they say they cant discuss the matter with me and have also said they will leave any further action for two weeks before pursuing the matter. They have said they may secure a charge on our property, naturally this is very worrying for us as pensioners. Does anybody have a similar experience or have any advice to offer please. All I get in response to my emails sent to Egg is - they will ask somebody to phone me as soon as possible. All I want is an explanation as to where they get the figure of £252.13 from as I never spent on the Egg card but would have used it for the balance transfer of 0% which I am sure I would have paid in full. We are talking of 5+ years ago that I had this account, so why does this debt suddenly appear - my bank account details have remained the same for 12+ years and my email address for the last 5+ years my address changed 2 1/2 years ago but we had a redirect from the post office when we moved. The whole thing is a complete mystery - if I believed or was told from whence this debt of money came I would not have a problem paying.
