Unexpected charge on invoice

Options
I just got the balance payment invoice for our stair carpet fitting from last week. There is an additional charge I knew nothing about 'to lost charge £108'.

We originally booked the fitting in January but to unforeseen circumstances, a leak, i had to call the fitter and cancell the fitting. and he was ok with it and we agreed id call when everything was sorted. due to carpenter let down, ages for builder to complete repairs, etc we finally booked the fitting for last week. Fitters turned up and competed the job in 2.5 hours.

I called the carpet shop and they said the additional cost was for turning the fitter away. Prior to them doing the job last week I'd only spoken to the fitter on the phone and had never met him in person, neither had there been any mention of an extra charge. When I originally cancelled I'm pretty sure it was the previous week as he was booked for a Monday. If not, then surely I should have been told I'd have to pay an extra £108?

How much notice did you give them?

I suspect their issue is they scheduled you in and lost a days work if you gave short notice.
  • I honestly don't recall if I cancelled the same day or the week before. I understand they'd have list a scheduled booking if it was short notice, but there was no mention at any time I'd get charged £109 for cancelling. There are no terms on the invoice either.

Ask them to demonstrate their losses due to your previous cancellation, and what they did to mitigate those losses. They can't just slap an arbitary charge on the invoice.

Or pay the invoice less the £108/£109

Are things becoming clearer as time progresses, or more confused in your own mind after just 6 hours?

What contract did you have with them and do you have any signed paper work prior to the invoice.
If so what does this contract say as regards to cancellation.
This is very important indeed, please explain in what format the quote or price was relayed to you and what you have signed.
    Be happy...;)

All I received in the first instance was an invoice via email with a request to pay an initial £200 deposit, which I paid over the phone on credit card. No signed contract or T&Cs. The fitter then phoned me independently to arrange the date.

What was on the invoice? Anything printed on it, perhaps on the BACK?

If there is no written contract or no contractual terms deemed to have been accepted upon this invoice then you owe what is on that invoice and not a penny more.
Pay what you owe if the work is satisfactory and tell them to take you to the small claims court if they think they are owed anything else.
Also make sure they know you will be letting all the locals on social media know they quote one price then try it on.
    Be happy...;)
