When is an expired debit card, not expired?

Short story long.
A few years ago I set up an account with Boxnet (a site to upload large files). I had not used them during 2011 and when the bill appeared on my Co-Op statement last year, I thought it must have been a standing order, so looked, no it wasn't, just from the card. I did not know the password and since it had been paid for the year I left it, knowing that by the time this year came along the card used would have expired. End of matter!!! This week the Co-Op have paid them for this year using the expired card. I phoned Co-Op and they say they paid because it is on the account used not the card???? I have now got a new password from the company that took Boxnet over and have hoepfully now cancelled for next year. I also asked the Co-Op to make sure they have noted I don't want to pay anymore. They have told me they might still pay but if they do I will get it back next year. Has anyone else had this problem? Boxnet when I could log on, did have a line at the top of their page warning me there was a problem with the card used, so I don't know why Co-Op can pay them.

I will hazard a guess the payment was being administered as re acurring payment therefore the transaction would still go through on an old card.

Its called Visa Account updater (mastercard have one the same)

Many companies will send out emails stating card details are invalid, yet still debit people.

NEVER EVER think that a expired or lost card will NOT be debited by a company where a CPA is involved.

[STRIKE]The payment is connected to the account, not the card. So even if you cancelled the card, the payment would still go through. Any new transactions would fail though.

A payment connected to the account is a DD or SO.

A CPA is connected to the card number. If a no longer valid card is held, then the retailer has the right to gain the new valid card details from either Visa or mastercard Via their account updater systems. Which can also be marked to show that the card holder no longer wants these payments to go through....
Well that if the retailer takes any notice......

Fair enough, I sit corrected :)

I remember bank staff telling me that, maybe they were trying to make it simpler for us non-techy folk :)

I see companies have to pay to join and subscribe to VAU, so not all companies will get their RP's updated when the card is cancelled or otherwise replaced.

    Per se they were right.
Ultimately it's linked to an account via the card number that can change or even cease.
