Hi, I am after some advice. My husband in the past has been bad with money. He defaulted on a credit card about 11 years ago and thought he was paying it off but had switched bank accounts.
Anyway we had 2 mortgages in that time however they then wrote to him years later and asked for the money. When we realised that it hadn't been paid we paid it in full from savings this was October 2007.
Last year we tried to get a mortgage but this was showing on my husbands credit file from 2010 he wrote to them with a copy of the letter to say it had been paid in full but we were told we would have to wait 6 years from the 2007 date for it to come off credit file.
The advice I'm after is can we apply for a mortgage from end of this year? Obviously we have had to wait a lot longer than most as the debt is about 11-12 years old. He does not have credit cards, he does not trust himself but I do and pay in full every month. We would like to move home what can we do to increase our chances of a mortgage? We've never missed a mortgage payment.
Thanks

If it is registered with a default date of 2007, then yes, it will come completely off his credit reports 6 years from that date. So definitely by the end of this year.
Any mortgage application would then be judged on what other things are still on his report.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
