Flights within EU/Booze at Airport

Hi all,

I'm flying from the north in UK, to Southampton, then a flight to France. I'm just wondering on the way back - if I were to buy wine at the French Airport, would I be able to take this on with my hand luggage all the way home? Or would it be stopped at Southampton due to the 100ml liquid? I am a little unsure if I would need to go through security at Southampton again?

I will not have any checked bags to pick up at any moment, only a small hand luggage bag.

Thanks

It's only checked before you go air-side at the departing airport

You'd have to re-pack it into your luggage at Southampton, if your luggage isn't checked through to your final destination. If this isn't possible then you'll lose it at Southampton.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy it in a supermarket in France and pack it in your hold luggage? Wine at airports, even in France, is well overpriced.

Edit: sorry, just seen you have no hold bags. It's a no-go then.

    Wrong!

You and your hand luggage have to go through security at every airport, so any wine you hand-carried from France would be examined again before taking your connecting flight.

Well it's generally right, just speed read and missed the bit about transiting through Soton rather than terminating there.
  • Thanks for the advice guys. It appears from the postings you believe I do need to go through Security again at Southampton?

I have checked the Southampton Airport website below and it appears to indicate I would be allowed to take the liquid(booze!) through as a connection. Does this seem correct or is it on an airport by airport basis? Looks like I may just leave the wine anyway, it was just a thought as a gift from France, if the odds are stacked against me I won't bother!

    Connections and transfers
I am transferring through your airport. Can I carry liquid items in my hand luggage if they were purchased in the duty free store at my previous airport?
If your journey involves transferring or transiting through Southampton Airport, you may be permitted to carry liquids, aerosols or gels – including duty free – through security in either of the following cases:
The items have been bought in the passenger-only zone at an airport in the European Union*, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland, or on board an aircraft operated by an EU carrier or one from Norway, Iceland or Switzerland . The items must be packaged in a sealed tamper-proof bag provided by the airport/airline, inside of which is proof of purchase showing that the items were bought on the day of travel.

    Or
The items have been bought in the passenger-only zone at one of the following airports: all international airports in Canada and the USA; Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Zadar and Zagreb in Croatia; Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia; or Changi in Singapore. The items must be packaged in a sealed tamper-proof bag provided by the airport, inside of which is proof of purchase showing that the items were bought within the last 36 hours.
    * The EU member states are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
  • The general rule is that you can take it as long as the duty-free shop gave it to you in a sealed bag and you have the receipt.

Canary Islands don't count - they may be part of Spain but they aren't part of the EU
