Pre-bokk car hire here or wait to hire in France?

We've never hired a car abroad before, but as we're going for 2 weeks we've both decided to be brave and try driving abroad and we thought it'd be best way to get about especially with a 2 year old.
Anyway, the question is - is it better/cheaper/easier to pre-book the hire now (already done a search with moneysupermarket - prices range for Ford Ka or similar for 2 wks £204-£246) or would we get a better deal over there. Also, if we did book over there, how would we know if the company was reputable, safe etc.
If we pre-book in the UK - has anyone got any recommendeations of any companies for me? I know the names of avis and hertz, but don't know of any of their reputations
What insurances does the policy need to cover? Will I need to alter my existing holiday insurance to cover car hire?
Lots of questions - sorry!
Many thanks for any advice given
P.S. Is it really difficult to drive in France? (Perpignan)

It's easier to hire in this country as the Ts & Cs will be in English and you can check them in the comfort of your own home. It's also nearly always easier to find a good deal here.
We have always found driving in France very easy - the roads are a lot quieter than here in general.0 -
I decided yesterday to book my car hire for France as I think by leaving it your choice of car will be reduced and I believe the prices will rise and i agree that by booking here you can understand exactly what you've bought! I chose Carhire3000.com in the end. They were the cheapest to include the damage excess refund but then Holiday Autos will pricematch.CHEAP IN COST NOT IN STYLE...0
