First Utility electricity usage and cost
Hi All
I'm new to all this utilities stuff. I had the keys for my new house on the 6th June and took an electricity reading of 28813.2. I contacted First Utility who the previous owners were with and setup an account for gas and electricity. Today, my electricity readingwas 28857.5 so since the 6th of June I've used approximately 44 units. Is this normal? All I've done is cut the grass and left a energy saving light on all night to deter thieves.
I'm on the iSave Everyday tariff and here are the unit costs: -
Supply Type Standing Charge Unit Rate
Electricity 13.650 p (per day) 17.416 p
Gas 14.700 p (per day) 3.635 p
To me the electricity unit rate seems expensive compared to others? Is this the going rate for electricity?
Thanks

I've just checked my bill which arrived last week, and that's with Utility Warehouse:
Electricity: price per kilowatt-hour: £13.723
standing charge of £3 a month
Gas: pence per kilowatt-hour £4.243
standing charge of £1.40 per month
so yours is cheaper than mine!0 -

An electric lawnmower will use between 1 and 2 kWh per hour.
You don't say how big the lawn is but most people cut theirs within an hour so lets say 2kWh.
An energy saving lightbulb uses about 10w.
So each day uses 0.24kWh
So in 14 days (on continuously all day & night) would use about 3-3.5kWh
So a total of about 5-6kWh should have been consumed based on the information you have supplied.
Are you sure this is all the energy you have used? Have you left your new home empty all this time or something?
I agree, your electricity price seems high, especially considering you also pay a daily standing charge.

Hi
Yes I've left my home empty all this time. Have I used a lot more than expected then? The only other thing I know is switched on is the boiler. How do I know how many kWh per hour I've used reading the meter?
Here is my meter - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26733/IMG_20130620_082508.jpg0 -
The rate of electricity is quite high but the standing charge is fairly low, my standing charge is £6/m but 11p/unit, it's swings and roundabouts really.
Rupert - if you've misplaced your decimal point, your electricity is cheaper!0
