New Kitchen.... B & Q

Options
We have had a quote for a new kitchen from B & Q which - for the kitchen - we are happy with.... however...

The old kitchen is just a mess, all the tiless need taking off, walls skimmed, the old ceramic tiled floor has missing tiles so they need to come up and the floor levelled.

We are getting rid of a very old range cooker and moving the new built in cooker and hob so electrics need moving.

The height of our plug sockets at the moment means we can't have wall cabinets so they need lowering.

The cost we have been quoted for completely stripping the room, skimming the walls, levelling the floor, moving the electrics and fitting the kitchen, with 5 year guarantee on everything to do with fitting (so leaks etc) and a 10 year guarantee on the actual kitchen is £4k:eek:

This on top of the kitchen price (we are ok with) is just tooooo much over what we wanted to pay.

We can't do DIY, we would just leave things and it would never get done.

Is it possible to get seperate people in to all the above. How do we organise it. Do I get a handyman to quote for removing the old kitchen, then a quote for a tiler to strip the walls and floor, then a plaster to skim etc... how do I know which days to get people to come in and in what order?

B & Q said it would be a 5 day job, start to finish, which does sound appealing, but 4k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

B&Q will not do the fitting themselves, they will take a big cut then sub-contract to somebody else.

Look for a local kitchen fitter to coordinate and complete the work, I bet they quote a lot less.

    £4k for 5 days work....nice!!!

plus all that work IS NOT a 5 day job i would double that at least
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

TBH, I don't think that is too unreasonable - sorry! There are a range of trades involved, many man-days (I wouldn't believe the 4-5 days!) and I can easily see how it could get to that number.

I agree. Bit confused though - if you don't do DIY are they also quoting to fit a new floor and retile (which you don't mention)? Plus don't forget costs of disposal, building materials etc.

I also don't believe that you'll get anything like a quality job done. I used to offer Magnet kitchens to customers - my firm would do the electrical work and I subbed out the fitting to a decent carpenter. At one property, the Magnet area rep came to see us and ended up booking a photo shoot - he'd never seen one of their own kitchens look that good! The devil is in the detail and when you go over what is and isn't included in the fitting package you'll probably have to get additional 3rd parties involved anyway.

£4K sounds suspiciously cheap to me, TBH, and for a decent job I'd expect that to be at least 10 days' work. Get some more quotes and likely you'll see what I mean.
  • I did this. I paid B&Q to supply and fit the kitchen (including rubbish and old kitchen units removal) but I had an electrician do the sockets (and a new fuse board); I took the old tiles off myself; and I had a tiler put the new ones on. He also fitted my floor. Much cheaper!
  • B and Q qill be overpriced for the fitting. Get a quote from a local kitchen fitter who will have all the trade you need on hand and be able to project manage the whole job making it run nice and smooth

B&Q quoted me approx £11,500 to supply & fit a new kitchen in the rather small room I have in my new home.

I was quite shocked & knowing it would be cheaper to find my own fitters I found qualified men to do a full installation & bought the units from Benchmarx & sourced my own top quality appliances, tap, etc. The total spend came in at around £7k for a fully completed room, so was a huge difference.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

B&Q are famous for loading the price of fitting their kitchens. All the work is subbed out anyway to local fitters with B&Q creaming off a big chunk of the price.

Find a local kitchen fitter or small builder and get a quote from them. While you're at it get them to quote for supplying the kitchen too. Most tradesmen have sources of kitchen units and doors of equivalent quality to B&Q but at far cheaper prices. Use B&Q to get the plan done and then shop around!
