Can I claim benefits if I quit my zero hours contract job?

I currently work on a zero hours contract for a company, which I have worked at for the last 3 and a half years. I used to get quite regular hours but over the last 6 months there hasn't been a lot of work on and for the last 5 weeks I haven't had any hours and there I don't know if I will get any hours next week or after.
I'm thinking of quitting because obviously I'm getting no money at the moment, I just wanted to know can you claim benefits straight away? I know they can refuse to pay them for a while if you voluntarily leave a job, but is this a good enough reason?

You can sign on if you work less than 16 hours a week.
You should be signing on to receive your NI contribution towards future benefits. Do not quit your job but do sign on to get your JS Allowance. You will have to be actively seeking work and fulfilling the job seekers agreement

    This.

it also gives you the opportunity to look for more stable work whilst having the chance of work with your current employer. Its easier to get a job if you've got one!

As the previous posters have said and don't quit just yet, start job hunting for another role.

You're more employable if you're currently in work

OP this has kind of answered a few issues I currently have regarding accepting a job offer on zero hours too.

YES you can and don't worry. AND you can tell them where to shove their !!!!!! up their wotsits and you can still get JSA and maybe we'll help you to find a proper job as opposed to living within a nest of vipers :j

Seriously you are entitled to FULL JSA, you can't get a leaving voluntarily referal for a zero hour contract.
