Cheap Flights to Thailand-July to September maybe??

Im possibly looking to travel to thailand after the 17th of July, for a period of up to 3 months from manchester. Ideally I would have loved to buy a one way to bangkok and decide when to return later- but one way tickets seem wayyyyy overpriced (plus I keep hearing horror stories of people not being allowed to board without onward travel proof).

Anyway can somebody suggest which airlines/sites I should be looking at for cheap flights? Im relatively savvy on european travel, but . Before anyone suggests skyscanner in this case, the problem I keep getting is a relatively modest price which all of sudden increases when following through to the websites suggested.

Also if anyone is extensively experienced with regards to a 2month+ stay in thailand/surrounding countries, all useful information is highly appreciated, related to the topic title or not. Ive read loads on the (i mean loads!!) but I keep getting contradictory information, hence any info is highly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, it's unlikely you would be allowed to board (or pass immigration if you got to Bangkok) if you have a one way ticket. It will be safer and cheaper to book a return where you can change the return date for a reasonable fee. Some people suggest booking a cheap disposable ticket out of Thailand as proof onward travel but Thai immigration have got wise to the trick. It used to be a country where you could stop virtually indefinitely with regular visa runs but those days are long gone.

For visa reasons I would limit Thailand to one month then move on to the rest of SE Asia then you can always return to Thailand later before flying home. It's easy to get stuck in Thailand but the rest of the region - Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam have a lot to offer.

I've got a lot of mates stay there and do visa runs, and a few who stay there but work elsewhere in the region so have a cheap onward travel ticket to show at check in or immigration if required.

I've never heard anything from them that these are no longer practical so can I ask where your information comes from?

Etihad seem to be the cheapest out of MAN to BKK these days.
Around the £650 mark, however if you could do 16/7 to mid Sept then its as low as £534

This actually sort of hits one of my problems. The cheapest I got through skyscanner for approximate dates was around £550, but through other sites offering Emirates' flights. However, even for the same dates and same flights, for some reason emirates' website is showing way higher prices.

Thanks for the advice. I did plan on cambodia and vietnam possibly. Im just not sure about Malaysia and Laos to be honest.

Holiday pirates have two deals to Bangkok at the moment, its worth keeping an eye on the site because some great deals come up. Also consider flying to Malaysia and/or Singapore and making your own way to Thailand, that may bring up some other deals and its really easy and cheap to travel between most SE Asia countries.

I've only ever used one way fights for travelling and found Skyscanner sometimes half the return price when you put in one way but when you go to the airline site is not 'half price'. I have no idea why or how to get round this. I don't think Kayak do it (but could be wrong).

The only place I had trouble boarding without an onward flight was Australia to NZ (no problems when I went from Malaysia to NZ) had no problems in SE asia either. If you want to get a cheap flight out of thailand look at AirAsia.

Laos and Malaysia are great, go visit all of the countries if you can, they are all different and special.

    have fun!

If you are going to the region for 3 months then noth Malaysia and Laos are worth a week each. Malaysia isn't everyone's cup of tea - it's more developed and "grown up" compared to Thailand but there's still plenty of places worth seeing. Laos is one of the world's best kept secrets.

The most important thing with planning such a long trip is to work out a reasonable budget and then stick to it. I've met so many people on my travels there who had dreams of spending months in SE Asia but have blown their money in the first two weeks in Bangkok and Phuket and have had to go home or were miserably trying to survive on £10 a day. Yes, it's a cheap part of the world but it's not the crazily cheap place that it was 10 years ago.

I think that Laos deserves at least 2 weeks, following the beaten path of Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. LP deserves up to a week on it's own, and between the three there's a fair bit of overland travelling time. More than 2 weeks if you want to start getting off the main beaten track a bit

Two good ways of getting into Laos overland are...

    - by bus from Chiang Mai, and the 2 day slow-boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang.

    - by overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Nong Khai. Couple of nights [or more] in Nong Khai. The cross the Friendship Bridge (get visa on the Bridge), and tuk tuk to Vientiane.

Cambodia deserves a couple of weeks [at least]...

    - Phnom Penh (3 nights). Killing Fields, S21 Genocide Museum, Russian Market.

    - Kampot/Kep (3 nights)

    - Siem Reap (4 nights). Angkor Wat and the historical site.

    - Battambang (3 nights).

...and there are lots of side trips depending on your interests.

Thailand. How longs a piece of string? The choices are endless.

Don't dismiss Myanmar either. A wonderful place, which is just a bit too busy with tour groups these days.

Never been to Vietnam, but it's not a destination you can see in a couple of days.

I think you've had a few too many libations of late. :) What is this tale that you tell? :)
No problem with a one way ticket as long as you obtain a visa(Tourist or otherwise) before travel. A Tourist Visa allows a minimum of 60 days extend-able to 90 days in country, before you need to leave or to utilise any other entries you have left on a multiple entry visa.
From Manchester, he can use the Hull Consulate. Why waste your money on a useless ticket? What are you thinking? :money:
