refused refund. need to wait on a cheque to ve delivered!

Hi guys
This is my first post and hope im doing it correctly.
I bought a £40 swimming costume from my local pool yesterday. I got it home and it had a pen mark I didn't see when ibought it. I went back today and I asked if I could swap it for another one but they had none in my size. I was offered a refund but they asked me to write a letter to the pool manager who would then send out a cheque in the post. I have been told this will take 10-14 days! Surely if you pay in cash should receive ur refund in cash?
