Buy through ebay or directly with seller

I know ebay say not to buy directly from the seller, for obvious reasons they don't get a cut of the sale and you're not protected by them.
I was wondering though how the protection through ebay differs from credit card protection?
I'm looking to buy some custom made furniture over £500 and they have a website where I can buy directly from them or they have an ebay listing where I can get the same item.
Which offers me more protection if the quality of the furniture is poor or if the item is damaged in transit?

I hate to bump a topic but it has disappeared from the first page, so I doubt I will get a reply otherwise. I was hoping someone might have some experience on this matter.

You're possibly going to get a quicker resolution with Ebay but you're likely to get a better deal going by the website.
If the Ebay listing is the same price as the website I'd be inclined to use Ebay, or ask on their website for a discount..0 -
Custom made? That's a magic phrase which reduces any protection.0

It's a standard unit that's made to measure, although I suspect it's semantics. With that in mind who is more likely to protect me against poor construction and or delivery damage? How much protection would I have?0
