Bill after VT

Hi Folks. Ive been floating about here for a while but now I need to ask a question.
Due to business not doing so well we decided to do a VT on our Citroen Picasso. Chap came out and inspected and took it away.
Later we recieve a bill for nearly £300 to put right all the imperfections. I will admit to the scuff and scratch on the front bumper. ( gatepost jumped out on me )
However they are charging for every little scratch. Bearing in mind this was a 4 year old family car I think a few scratches would be reasonable. Plus a cigarette burn on the rear seat which was there when we bought the car from the dealer ( I have never smoked in the car )
Plus they are also charging for a dent in the door and a dent in the roof neither of which I ever noticed and nor did the chap who inspected it. It also had 9 months tax which we were told we could have back, but the collector told us we have to leave it in as he didnt have trade plates and it would be illegal to move the car without the tax being displayed. ( true enough )
Called the company, they will only talk to my wife as the car was in her name, and are threatening court if its not paid in full straight away.
I need to write a letter disputing their claim, but I havent got a clue where to start.
Help please.

That was my thought. Given what the charges can come out at, they seem to be fairly cheap for the damage they are listing!
£300 for a scrape on the bumper doesn't sound bad at all. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0
