Uni Resits Not Sure What To Do

Not sure if I should resit my exam or not. It was my first year of the course (law part time). I don't know if I have the motivation to spend my time revising or if I should just pack it in.

It'll take 5 years to complete part time, and being a mature student, I feel a bit old to be studying again. I was unemployed when I started the course last year, so applied. It was good to get out of the house, have a routine, and something to do with my time. I have enjoyed the course, but there are times when I think at my age I should have a proper full time job, well a career at this stage.

I've always said I'd leave the course if the right job came along. Or stay if I got a part time job.

If I leave, I'll be back to square one, stuck in the house bored out of my mind.

Sorry to hear about your disappointing result, however, I think you have answered your own question. You benefited from doing the course, and without the degree you have no real prospect of the kind of job you want.

Try telling yourself that studying is your job, so you take it as seriously as you would a professional role (which it is, in the long term).

As for being too old: I returned to study when i was mid-thirties and was 43 when I finally got my last degree. And there are plenty of students who are older than me!

I'm one, I was 52 when I got my Masters, and I now have a new career that so far hasn't got me disillusioned like I was in my old one. And I'm hoping to be able to do a PhD at some point, so I could be close to 60 by the time I finish that.

Its only one exam I have to do as I passed all the others. I don't want to be throwing away all the work I put in. I suppose its just finding the motivation. Would just love to get a decent job soon (then I won't have to go back).

I'd wanted to do law years ago but family circumstances got in the way, so I took an office job. I had admin jobs before for a long time, but it wasn't really for me. Then I had a sales job which I loved. That's where I really see myself going career wise. So after that, I started the course. But with no job now, I don't want to be left sitting in the house wasting time doing nothing.

Thanks for the suggestion of seeing the studying as my job :) It'll help with the revision.

Why would you think that, many people have a career later in life, or a second career after taking redundancy, or changing direction.

Ermm, how old should you be. I've just finished my degree - I'm 45, and plenty are older than me!

Yep, and if you pack it in you'll be back on the bottom rung of the ladder. Once or twice when I felt overloaded with work, and my motivation was less than zero, I looked at the alternative - rubbish job or no job, and no degree. It soon pulled me round to get my work done.

I think sometimes playing with the way you see uni work, and the alternatives can bring about a spurt of motivation. If you truly don't want to do it, perhaps it is time to move on, but if you do, and you can visualise yourself coming out of the other side, perhaps seeing you have passed your exams, and moving to your next year of study, it is worth it :)

I'd stick it out if I were you. Your age says nothing about you being a good student so try to get the degree finished. You don't want to spend your entire life thinking what if I'd have stuck it out. This will give you the opportunity to find the career instead of waiting for it to just happen.
