I have paid over £1000 and was not supplied 1 kwh. Can I ask for compensation?

I moved into a house in April 2012 and immediately asked my current supplier to take over the supply of the electric. As far as I was aware the supply was taken over. I continued to receive bills from the old supplier- I wrote to them to say they did not supply the electric. I moved out in March 2013. I called the supplier to tell them the meter reading- but they wouldn't accept it- they said it did not match.
It has transpired by involving the financial ombudsman that the new supplier NEVER supplied the electric- they linked the supply to the old no longer existent meter. The old supplier did supply the electric and I owe them money. I have paid in excess of £1000 for Electric which was not supplied- they have had the money for over a year and sorting out this mess has been a monumental waste of time. Can I ask for some sort of recompense? I would be very grateful for advice!

The ombudsman would have awarded you compensation if any was considered appropriate0 -
You really should have registered with the existing supplier, your existing supplier would not normaly try to initiate this.
The existing supply at the house has to be finalised ( by you ) before your current supplier could take over.
Once you were with the existing supplier your current supplier may have agreed to put you on your old tariff.
There has been a total lack of communication here.0 -
You could try asking for some nominal gesture from one or other supplier if you can show they were at fault in some way and / or that you have somehow incurred a loss as a result of their error but I would think the main issue here is to get your £1000 refunded and / or paid over to the actual supplier.
Surely the "old" supplier was issuing & chasing their bills if they were still supplying the property?
Did the new supplier never ask why you were sending them this money / what they were supposed to be allocating it to?0 -
Thanks for all the responses.
I have never known a situation like this. I have been in touch with both suppliers throughout. I foolishly believed that because SSE said they had taken over the supply that that had actually happened and that the old supplier was at fault continuing to send bills. So in retrospect this could have been sorted sooner as I didn't realise I hadn't had a final bill. Yes terrible!!
I am in the process of reclaiming all payments made- will see how long it takes!!0 -

I thought the ombudsman sorted all this out?
If not, get back onto the ombudsman.0
