Touching up rendering

Hi all.
The front of my house is rendered, but due to badly fitted windows, cables, guttering etc. before we bought the house, there are a few holes that I would like to fill.
I used a recipe of 4:1 planting sand:cement. This did not work very well. I subsequently read that I should add plasticiser or lime? So, my question, what should I add for just patching the holes?
As always, thanks in advance for your help! Much appreciated!
