Cheap Basal Temperature Thermometers?

:hello: Well dh and I have decided to start TTCing :kisses2: so I thought it would be a good idea to try this charting malarky... but I need to get my hands on a basal temperature thermometer! I have a very good digital ear thermometer but apparently I can't use that!? Is that true?
Anyone got any tips on where to pick up a cheap basal thermometer? I've heard they can be quite expensive!
Thanks for your help, and a big sprinkle of baby dust to all other TTCers!!:grouphug:

I didn't bother buying one. I already had a digital to 2 decimal places one I'd picked up in Adli a year or so before. I think you are only supposed to take your temp orally or vaginally when basal charting.

I'd suggest having a look on ebay or in boots for a digital one.

Good luck with your TTC I caught the first month I started charting, although it was month 4 TTC.

From personal experience, I would wait a few months before you start charting. It really does take all the fun and spontaneity out of things, and piles on the pressure even if you think it won't, and makes it ultimately harder to conceive. We tried for 6 years for no 1, and were charting for a large part of that and it was miserable. No 2 came along completely naturally, and the whole thing was much more liveable with.

However, if you do want to start straight away down this route, an oral digital thermometer is fine, and they are really not very expensive to buy from places like Boots. It will be much less expensive than your ear thermometer was, but do keep the ear one as they are a godsend for taking the temp of a cranky baby with very quickly!

:T Thank you all so very much for your quick replies! :T I will look at the Boots thermometer but check out normal oral thermometers too! For anyone thinking about ear thermometers they really are so very easy to use - they can be expensive but we got ours via a good offer at Tesco (got loads of points too!) :money:

I certainly would agree that it's pobably a good idea for most people to be relaxed about TTCing and have fun along the way ;) !! Things are slightly different for us because unfortunately I have know fertility issues :( so charting will hopefully help optimise timing :kisses2: !!! (sorry if tmi!)

Vantage and LLoyd's chemists often have the most spectacular bargains. Our local Lloyd's sells a range of blood pressure monitors/thermometers etc at incredible prices. These are one off promotions and you have to go to the shop to spot them-but you could ring up and check. This week they have an air purifer down from something like £49 to £9.99.

Hello Emma! I'm charting at the moment, that's why I'm up early as I wanted to update my chart on Fertility Friend :o I agree with Nicki it is so easy to get obsessed and it can take the fun out of things slightly. I prefer it though as my cycle is long and I like to know where I am.

I got my thermometer from Ebay, a shop called Babymad, it worked out to be about £6 with the postage but I ended up replacing the battery almost straight away. It's fine now.

I recommend the site http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ as it takes all the guesswork out of it and there are also a lot of forums with ttc boards where you can chat to ladies going through the same thing. If you would like a recommendation then let me know

Also the book Taking Control of your Fertility, it is initially a bit  as it is a big book but I have learned so much about signs of fertility from it.

    Good luck!!

Poundland had digital thermometers yesterday- if it is accurate to two decimal places it is good enough to do your temps.

Good Luck TTC- been there done that, only got one T shirt, though;)

:T Aww thanks again everyone! Haven't bought that thermometer yet but am heading out shopping today / on ebay! Poundland will definately be getting a visit!
Flimsy - I'm on FF too! I have not decided whether I will join any TTC forums (think it may add to the pressure!) but I know from past experience that such forums can really provide excellent support. I've read loads about the book, may invest in a copy! Good luck (and have fun  )
