This is typical of restaurants in the UK who make no real effort to accomodate families in their establishments. And before anyone says that we can all go to a Harvester, yes I know we can but sometimes it's nice to eat in a 'real' restaurant as a family.

We holiday in Portugal each year, staying on a golf complex, and have one or two meals each time in their clubhouse restaurant. Not only do they offer a childrens menu alongside their fine dining menu but they are more than happy to serve children off the main menu at a discount. This year for example we paid 50% of cost (26 euro 3-course set menu) for my 10 year old son, 75% for my 13 year old DD and full price for my 16 year old DD - the main difference to the OP being that they all ate exactly the same courses and portion sizes as we did!!!! What really made us laugh was that our 13 year old was served a child discounted menu - and then they asked if she wanted wine with her meal lol!

I believe it certainly used to be the case (sure someone can tell us whether it still is) that if you believe you have been charged an unfair amount in a restaurant, you can refuse to pay the full bill, and instead leave your contact details shoudl the restaurant wish to pursue the matter.

And about the service charge, unless it is room service, then that is purely a suggestion, and again, cannot be enforced if you don't want to pay it.
