I have a user who is new to the world of home computers and has been given a laptop which looks like it has been partially freshly installed before handing over, but I would appreciate if someone could glance at it and comment in these catagories. My thoughts in green

1) what else needs to be installed

open office

2) What needs updating

IE ?, Firefox( although prob won't be used) , adobe reader

3) what needs deleting

Epson stylus ( have just installed Epson xp202)

Google Drive ( installed by accident ) when updating Avast

4) anything to disable

disable windows defender

I also guess it would be a good idea to make a recovery disk.

Thanks

It would benefit from a RAM upgrade.

Yes , I thought that may be so. I run XP on 1GB happily but Vista could do with more ?

Yes. Most recommendations are at least 2GB

More help please.......on startup and disk space (apologies for long post)

    Startup
I know more RAM will be a big part of answer and that will be ordered , however I've been trying to trim down the startup anyway and disabled quite a few bits(using Closed's speedup thread) and have succeeded in increasing the boot time from 06:27:33 to 08:39 ! (according SIW software) with the last 3 things I disabled
( PowerDVD, Adobe reader speed launcher and Windows Defender (although already prevously disabled using instructions from speed thread).
    how can that be ?

I'm supposed to be improving things not making them worse
EDIT: boot time now showing 12 mins - maybe not to be believed then ?

2 heavy processes running just after startup are e_fatiime and e_farnime.exe which cause CPUto be at 100%.
I know these are to do with new Epson Printer/scanner but given the amount of time they will use it , it seems a big pay off to have this starting/runnng all the time. I can't see a way to disable though without putting future op of printer/scanner at risk.

Anything else I can disable ?

I've noticed a process running called Lightscribe, and from googling I find it is a disc labeller which the now owner of laptop is unlikely to use. However even though it appears on DDS log it does not appear in list of installed programs(control panel or ccleaner) or startup, so I don't know how I would get rid of/disable it.

    ==============================

    Disk space

    Disk C:ACER , 32.3 GB Total, 7.31 GB Free
Disk D: DATA , 32 GB Total, 31 GB Free:

I've run Windirstat and 73% (17.5 GB) of space used in in Windows Folder.

From a quick look round I can't find any user data - eg docs, music, photos

I've run Ccleaner but have stopped shy of running disk clean up old restore points/backup copies/shadow copies, as I don't have the means to make full back up of pc first. EDIT : it is now only showing 3 restore points anyway (not sure why?)

I've read 'bog-standard up-to-date install of vista H/P and a few installed programs will easily use in the region of 20 or so Gigs of hdd space' - how much space should I be looking to advise to keep free on C: ?

    Thanks

LightScribe is/was listed in the programs list.
    LightScribe 1.4.142.1

That LightScribe process (LSSrvc.exe) loads as a service, so run services.msc from a run command and disable it from there.

    Then delete this folder:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe

Also do a search for any other LightScribe folders too (%programfiles% & %appdata%)
