I am getting system alerts re malware threats and am about to go through the steps on here to remove. It mentions service packs for windows - my pc is only a couple of months old - will I have the service packs on already?

You should be up to service pack 2 (if it is windows XP). Make sure windows is up to date by going to http://www.windowsupdate.com.
If you right click "My Computer" and select properties, it should give a summary of your pc including windows version and service pack version."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Odd - if you are getting system alerts then you are infected BUT most software that spots malware will also fix it.I am getting system alerts re malware threats
I suspect that it's malware itself that's putting up the messages and it's trying to con you into downloading more malware or to pay a hefty fee to "fix" the problem (or both).
Even if so you still follow the advice in the "Malware/Spyware Removal Guide" thread.
And for a PC a few months old it should be fairly up to date and if it's on a broadband connection the odds are that all appropriate updates have been downloaded - but to be sure click on "start" then "windows update"0
