new cd/dvd drive costs very little
itunes can cause the drive to appear like it's not working https://support.apple.com/kb/ts2372
you could also transfer by mapping a network drive, or via a usb stick or external hard disk!!

If you're not able to replace the CD drive, then the above would be my advice.
Rip the CD onto your laptop, then transfer the MP3s using a flash drive/usb stick or an external.
If you have a network in your house, even a BT router, and you have your laptop and your PC connected to the network, you should be able to share drives, so you could transfer the files over the network instead of using a flash drive or external HDD.0 -
Thanks for the reply. Not looking to buy a new drive as I am just helping out a relative sort out a few iTunes's issues. I think I might go down the USB stick route! Do I just rip to USB then transfer USB to PC and copy across? or is mapping a network just as straightforward?0

sharing your drives is generally, right click on folder -> share with...
then on the other computer, you'll go to Computer and look in the Network section for the shared computer.
Windows advice though, I'm not a Mac owner.0 -
Okay, thanks. I'll give it a go. I am assuming I can just use a straightforward usb cable for this? (I am on Windows myself)0

Oh yes, works surprisingly well, but does cost £10 so , perhaps not the best option ins this case.

Direct USB connection is going to be an expense or a pain.
If you can get everything on a single USB stick then go for that.
Otherwise map a network drive if they're on the same network. If not, use Dropbox or SugarSync or Google Drive or similar to sync a folder on each machine together.0
