Asking for a refund after the order is not fulfilled?

Could you pls help me?
I have ordered an item from a website and paid by my credit card.
After more than one week, I contacted them and they said the item is out of stock. They asked me if I want something else, but I only want a refund.
How should it be done so that the refund will be quick? Can I be protected in this case?

Lets not make this in to something it's not now0 -
And they technically have up to 30 days to get the refund to you.0
