Please help. Can I claim bank charges from more than 6 years ago?

Hi,

I am really, really hoping that someone can help me.

I have just discovered an old box in the attic with some bank statements dating as far back as 2000/2001. [I am having a sort-out because I am moving!]

I had completely forgotten that I had the account with First Direct. On looking through all the statements, I found that I have been charged in excess of a £1,000 in bank charges and that does not include all the debit interest.

This was at a time that I had lost my job and was claiming JSA.
If I remember correctly, I closed the account and moved to another bank.

My question is can I now claim the charges back and how would I do this? I do not need to ask them for the statements/evidence etc as I already have all of these.

In addition there is a regular debit to a Natwest credit card I obviously had at the time going-out approximately monthly on the statement.
How do I find-out about this card and if I incurred charges or had PPI on it? I do not have any details whatsoever for this card or account. :money:

Any help/advice would be VERY much appreciated.

Thank you :j

First of all the banks won the case re bank charges.

You cant claim historically under the ;hardship' rules.

Ring Nat West about the direct debit going out, they will tell you what it was for. Was it definitely a credit card or could it have been a subscription or something, very probably if it was the same amount each month.

If you don't remember what the card, if you had a card, was for or whether you had PPI on it I doubt you would remember if it was miss sold or not. But ring them anyway, they will tell you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

You've completely missed the boat as far as re-claiming any of these charges.
In order to reclaim Bank charges you have to prove current "hardship" and even if the Bank agrees to refund such charges they'll typically only consider the last six months, not years.

Hard luck, time to finally throw those statements in the bin.

Just to add to what others have said, reclaiming of bank charges only typically succeeds where those charges are applied to your current, main bank account.

You say you closed the bank account, so yet another reason you are unlikely to succeed.
