moving home- who is responsible

Good morning all

We have moved in a new built a while ago. When we moved in, the developers said that they have informed the Gas/ Electricity providers about the move.

So far we have not received a bill (it’s been nearly a year since we moved) or a reminder. This makes us think, that the developer never told the utility provider about the move and that they are probably still paying.

I have read somewhere that the previous owner is responsible for paying the bill until the provider is being told about the move or until a new meter reading has been provided. Nobody has ever wanted to read our meter for either gas or electricity.

Does anyone know if the previous owner (in our case the developers) are indeed responsible for paying until the provider is told? Or, if we call the provider up now to let them know that we live in this property, do we have to pay from the start (i.e. the meter reading taken when we moved in?)Or can we just provide a current reading and get a bill from now?

Thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

bettmi :)

British Gas have a backlog of work so I'm afraid they do know about you and your likely to get a sudden bill for the whole period. So I hope you've been putting the money aside. Your responsible for the ulitities you use from the day you move. You should contact them and make sure they know about your move but I'm afraid no one else is responsible for the charges except you.

thank you very much for your reply.

We are with EDF Energy and on their "guide to payment options" it says that:

"If you don't tell us you have moved out, you will still be responsible for the gas or electricity used at your property, until we find out that a new customer has moved in, or until the meter is next read."

This is what made me think that if EDF have not been told by the developer, we would not be responsible to pay until they have been made aware.

So if EDF does not know that we are the new occupier, we would only have to pay from the moment they have been made aware.

As black-saturn said, there is a huge backlog, so I will call them up to see what is going on. In case they do not have our details, I want to know what rights I have, according to the guide they publish.

    Thank you.

it is your responsibilty to contact the local meter point registration service the host supplier will provide this in your area-they will be able to direct you to your supplier via your supply numbers. if they have not been notified yet i would suggest you contact the developers ask them for the supply company they used and your supply number then register your details ans start meter reading with them- i would recommend you do this asap as over last 18 mnths prices have at least doubled and you will be setting yourself up for a fall as you are not currently living within your means
sorry to sound hard but i shoot straight from the hips
    kind regards

You will be billed from when you moved in, not from when you call, so I would suggest getting in touch otherwise the debt will continue to build ;)
