Removing supports after installing steel beam

Hi all,
I am wondering how long should you ideally leave the supports in when you install the steel.

My builder made a hole in the wall, put in supports, removed the wall, installed the steel and removed the supports - ALL IN ONE DAY. I am shaking with panic!!! The builder insisits he knows what he is doing and he does similar jobs day in day out.

I've seen pics of his work, but this seems so scary. Building control guy is coming tomorow to inspect.

the beam should be packed up with slate or similar which doesn't need to set and is load bearing immediately so I'd guess you have nothing to worry about.
  • Once the beam is properly installed there is no need for the supports as it is bearing the weight. Unless the beam looks to be improperly installed, there is no need to panic!

    Don't be so hysterical.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

As long as the steel was packed with slate/steel shims or similar then it is load bearing immediately and you have nothing to worry about.

Super!! Thank you guys for all the reassurance!

I was in such a panic all morning. You know, there are painters and bathroom fitters upstairs. I called the painters at like 10am and they didnt answer my call. I was like - Oh no! call the ambulance. I calmed down after a few mins and then called the bathroom fitter. They are all okay.

I seriously dont know why I am so paranoid about this load bearing wall. I had a few sleepless nights because of it!!

Don't want to alarm you, but in a previous house our builder took the props out straightaway - and he had put in pad stones, slate etc - and the following day we noticed a long (but very thin) crack had appeared in the stone wall in the room above. We put tape on it to detect further movement over the next few days - there was none - and later we cemented the crack together. The wall was then plastered and no further issues occurred. Another builder advised that the props had been removed too soon  I'm sure in your case all will be fine though ;)
