My husband is considering buying an estate car and having discounted a few and being on a fairly limited budget, he's thinking of a Volvo V40 on a reg plate between a W-reg and a Y-reg.
He's really enjoyed the 2.0 version on a test drive and we were advised to avoid the 1.6 model by the dealer.
He's fairly happy with his choice but can anyone tell me what is likely to go wrong on these cars and what the repair/service bills are like and maybe an website where I can get any info?
Cheers,
Dexters Mum

I have a V40 on a 51 plate and after for several years having brand new cars I am more than happy with the volvo.... the newer cars I had were less relaible.
so far in 18 months I have had new tyres and thats it, however I do seem to have the cigar lighter fuse go regular which is pain as I use it for hands free/sat nav etc. and the fuse is in an awkward place to change.
Apart from that totally happy with the car, cost me £3500 (quite high millage though as ex rep car)

Don't buy the non-metallic red one, these fade like mad, espec. the roof. Affects resale value badly.
Apart from that, a great car. Like you say, avoid 1.6 like the plague.0 -
Thanks all, I cannot find anything on the internet that seems to be a major NO NO against these cars, so we have pretty much decided to go for one, we're just waiting for the right one to come along now, am hoping we'll get a 2.0 litre with leather, myself, but as we have cash in the bank waiting, we'll just keep looking until the right one pops up.
I don't think we'd being going for the red but I was interested to hear from your experience that they fade...I also have this with my 3 year old Corsa, she's faded like mad too.
Thanks for the advice and experiences!£2 Coin Savers Club (Christmas)- £86£1 Jar (Christmas)- £29Christmas Vouchers Saved: £1450 -
My old Mondeo blows cigarette lighter fuses also, curious isn't it. It's only ever used for Tom-Tom.0

Have a read on the owners club site. If you ask they will tell you all known issues and recall work to look for.

We've got an 850 T5 and I love it, might be old as it's 13 this year but very nice car, lovely to drive only regret is we didn't get the estate as could do with the space now. No intention of parting with it any time soon, when we do change it I'l probably get another Volvo. One day I might be more organised...........
