If you're buying a pushbike, it might be worth looking into the cycle to work scheme (or whatever it's called), basically gives you a tax break on buying the bike.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

Remember OP does not want to cycle home - uphill after a 10 hour shift. I presume the problem is the pedalling rather than cycling as such so electric bike should be OK!

The problem would be the cost of an electric bike though I suspect? Looking very quickly on eBay they seem to cost about the same as a cheap scooter. Although granted it would then save lots of other costs. But not sure the OP could afford either?

You can buy electric bike conversion kits on ebay rather than paying full wack for one.

You retrofit these kits to a cheap mountain bike and hey presto!

Looks like they cost £200 minimum?

£24 a week travel expenses, assuming a 5 day working week is less than £5 a day. Even at NMW, that's still less than 1 hours gross pay.

£100 is too much?! I pay £250 a month on fuel alone!
  • I have solved this now a mate at work is going to sell me a mountain bike this week :D I will put the money I save away each month until I have the price of a cheap scooter.

The £1000 electric bike is as much as I was going to pay for the bike tax insurance cbt and gear all rolled into one so thats a non starter and have checked with Sodexo who I work for and they know nothing about the bikes to work scheme. I have googled Sodexo and credit unions and they do that in the U.S but not over here which is a pity but hey ho its on my mountain bike I go :D
Will also have a look at the motor kits available for future use :D

Thanks for your time and input :D
