Oh they are definitely dodgy, using my own number asthe dispay for an incoming call. They did ask for me by name,it was my own landline number that appeared on the screen, happened a few times.I care for my Grandmother full time and my Mum is very ill at the moment which is why am trying stop these,my heart leaps each time the phone rings at the moment.

I also had this happen to me yesterday, although they asked for someone else who we assume had our landline number before we took it over a year ago. I didn't quite twig that it was our number on the caller display until afterwards. Very confusing and clearly dodgy.
Thank you to all the lovely competition posters
  • Same thing happened to me yesterday. Rather strange looking to see who is calling you and your own number is flashing back at you.
It was an Indian guy claiming to be something to do with microsoft telling me my software in my computer was corrupted.
I presume he would have tried to get some money out of me but ended the conversation so dont know.

This happened to me just now. I happened to be catching up on The Returned at the time, so to see my own number appearing on Caller Display was quite spooky, to say the least.

Anyway, it was some Indian guy saying that Microsoft had been receiving error messages from my computer or something. I said to him Microsoft don't do that sort of thing, to which he countered that he didn't say he was from Microsoft. I got quite stroppy and told him no, he just wanted to get control of my computer blah, blah, blah and I told him to go away and to stop calling me. He hung up.

I have to say I found it very unnerving to see my own number on display, and now feel quite unsettled! Hope it doesn't happen again.
  • Happened to me too yesterday. Very unnerving. Contacted my landline provider, Virginmedia, have been informed by email that I cannot add my number to the barred callers facility on my phone along with all the other cold callers too numerous to mention (even though I am registered with TPS). Has anyone else tried barring their own number? I don't understand why it can't be barred.

I have also received a call from my own number. I did not answer and the caller rang off before they got the answer message.

I have since been told that this is a scam whereby an overseas call is made at premium rates at my expense. I was told that you get charged for the call if you or your answer phone takes the call.

For the life of me I cannot figure out how it can work and the scammer gets the money.

Have I been misinformed, if not how does it work and what can I do about it?
