I don't think its American but "destinated " seems to be replacing arrived in some areas.

I've never heard this one, so shall be keeping an ear out for it.

I noticed when travelling in the US that they appear to have an aversion to using the word "now" in announcements. It always has to be "at this time". I have no idea what that is all about. Maybe they think it sounds less direct or assertive or something.

Lavatory is Middle English via Latin, it translates as "wash-place" Lava as in Lavage to wash and Tory is a place or room.

Similarly to biscuit ...it's become so normalised we don't question it! ( despite speaking Italian and learning Latin :rotfl:)

I live in the South West and the most entertaining thing you can hear is a group of local teens with yokel accents trying to talk like sarf London urban gangstas. It all goes a bit "oi be drinking zoider bruvva innit".

Yes! The lad that lives upstairs from me is a prime example. If I never hear the word "safe" again it'll be too soon.

Biscuits and gravy. Where the gravy is actually a white sauce with crumbled sausage meat in it. Blech! But not nearly as blech as grits. That stuff should be banned, especially when it has melted butter in it.

Strangely enough they also have normal gravy made from meat juices but that's never eaten with American biscuits, which are really scones to us.

Another strangeness was chopped, mixed vegetables in lemon jelly (Jello) served as an accompaniment to a main course. Wherever that came from needs to go straight back there.

There was a discussion programme on TV a while back, about high rates of unemployment among young people.
As soon as most of them opened their mouths the mystery of why they had not been successful gaining employment was soon solved

It's not just you OP. I dislike gotten, turn that off already, least worst option, 24/7, touch base, heads up, you do the math, that'll learn you, issue, regular, normalcy, two-time/three time instead of double or triple, take-out, bi-weekly, dude, bro. The list goes on and on.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

I'm probably guilty of using a few Americanisms. I lived over there for a while and you have to adapt and start using them if you want to be understood and not just get a lot of funny looks when you ask where the bin is, or offer to do the hoovering.

I believe Americans know and use a lot more 'Britishisms' since the success of Harry Potter!

What do they call a bin then? Just wondered cos I don't know.
