Is this a fair quote for installing a new domestic boiler?

Hi, need some advice…

Our boiler went on strike (again). It’s a 15 year old combi boiler in this house we newly bought last year.

We called a local plumber (gas engineer?) to fix it but it didn’t work out. We asked him to quote for installation of a new boiler. He recommended two models from Vaillant : Ecotec Pro 28 and Ecotec Plus 831 ...

Here’s his quote:

REMOVE OLD BOILER AND FLUE SYSTEM
RENEW EXISTING BOILER WITH VAILLANT ECOTEC PRO 28
FIT NEW FLUE SYSTEM
ADDITION OF WASTE FOR CONDENSATE TO DRAIN
FIT TO SYSTEM MAGNACLEAN FILTER AND LIMESCALE REDUCER FOR BOILER PROTECTION
SYSTEM FLUSH AND ADD INHIBITOR
REMOVE ALL WASTE FROM PREMISES

LABOUR £450.00
MATERIALS

ECOTEC PRO 28 £740.00
STANDARD FLUE 65.00
CLOCK 39.00
FILLING LOOP 12.00
MAGNACLEAN 85.00
LIMESCALE REDUCER 25.00
CHEMICALS 35.00
COPPER AND WASTES 30.00

EX VAT £1481.00
VAT @ 20% 296.20
TOTAL £1777.20

So I have two questions here:

1. Is his quote fair?
I know we should shop around before making decision, but it has been more than a week without hot water. My husband is away the entire week. I really want the work to be done as quickly as possible.

2. Are these two models wise choice for us? Ecotec Pro 28 and Ecotec Plus 831 ...
The house has two bedrooms including one in the converted loft plus a fair size bathroom. The house itself is not very big. But we do plan to extend it within 5 years, probably making it 3 or 4 bedrooms.

3. Shall I be concerned for getting one man instead a company to install a new boiler? I don’t think he’s recognised service provider by Vaillant. In long term, will this make any difference?

Thank you!

I believe it's between 1100 to 1200 excl VAT in the market. But he verbally mentioned to me it should cost 200 more than Pro 28.

the 831 is a better boiler, the pro is their starter model, pro 28 11.5 ltrs/min hot water 2 yr warentee, 831 12.7 ltrs/min hot water 5 yr warentee, nothing wrong with using a good independant & will normally be better than a national company because he has his rep to protect, if he's not a vailliant acredited installer he will only be able to offer the normal warentee whereas a cred installer will get extra warentee, tbh the price he has given you is very good so if you can afford it i would go for the 831

  • Thank you. I suspected we wouldn't find a better deal elsewhere, but the pressure of time doesn't help to give us enough time to confirm.

Sounds very good to me, especially for London, but I would agree with SCRGI, go for the 831

Can someone tell me whether the following quote is reasonable as I have no clue about these things, and I need to know whether a change from a singe-loop system is worth changing to a dual-loop system? And finally, is the suggested boiler any good?

To take out existing boiler and dispose of.
Supply and fit Heatslave 18/25 Oil combi boiler to be located in pantry.
Flue with plumage kit to remove flue gases to higher level.
Boiler to be controlled by twin channel programmer and room stat.
Run new oil line to boiler position (fire valve)
Resite oil tank inside boundary on concrete slabs.
Supply and fit 5 No. radiators, 3 to be fitted with TRVs
Lounge to be fitted with room stat.
Have alowed fro chrome towel rail in bathroom.
At the moment the system is a single pipe. To bring it up to boiler manufacturers
regs and building regs, I have included in mky price to repipe to twin circuit.
I have also priced for a flue extension due to the thickness of stone wall. This may
    not be needed.

    Total price £6058.56 including VAT.

    Thank you for your help!!
