in Credit cards
Just came back from a trip to France and notice we've been charged for using the Lloyds TSB Visa card in restaurants and super markets.
No big deal because we took cash and only used the card a few times.
But I don't remember this charge before, only for taking cash out of the hole in the wall.
Anyway I see there are 4 CCs which do not charge extra for overseas transactions. But do they hide that charge in the exchange rate they give you????
And I've been considering applying for a new CC anyway for a few years but have always baulked at making an application as I've been early retired for 15 years with no actual income as in salary and wondered if I'd be turned down for a new CC because of this.
Any advice???

It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

The charge has always existed. It's now more explicit on your statement.
Halifax Clarity is where I'd start. They use the official Mastercard rate which, for most countries, is as good an exchange rate as you'll get.0 -

I have the Halifax clarity and I cant fault it.
No hidden extras and the exchange rate offered abroad is excellent, it would be a good place to start.0 -
Two votes for Halifax Clarity.
Any comment on the fact I don't have a recognised income outside of interest from investments and how that might effect my acceptance or not as the case may be.It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -

I used Lloyds debit card for buying some foreign currency in a Change de Bureau, which had the best rate on travelmoneymax.com. But Lloyds debit card charged a fee for doing that too! I looked into the fine print and it did mention those charges. It’s very very bad for anything involving foreign currency.0
